A Brief About Steam Turbines Operation and Its Types

The steam turbine is a prime mover in which the potential
energy of the steam is transmitted into kinetic energy and
latter it turn to transformed into mechanical energy  of rotations of the turbine shaft.
The turbine shaft directly and with the help of reduction
gearing , is connected with the driven mechanism.

Depending upon type of driven mechanism, a steam turbine
may be utilized in mos divers field of industries, for power
generation and for transport,
Transformation of potential energy of steam into mechanical

energy of rotation of the shaft is brought about by the different means.

Classification of Steam Turbines:-

The Most Important Turbine Which Are:-
  • Impulse Turbine.
  •  Reaction Turbine
  • Combination Of Impulse And Reaction Turbine.

Let's , Turbine Are Classified By Different Ways,”
According To Number Of Pressure Gauge:-
  • Single – Stage Turbine.
  • Multi – Stage Impulse And Reaction Turbine.
According To Direction Of Steam Flow:-
  • Axial Turbine
  • Radial Turbine
According To Number Of Cylinders:-
  • Single Cylinder Turbines.
  • Double Cylinder Turbines.
  • Three – Cylinder Turbines.
  • Four –Cylinder Turbines
According To Method Of Governing:-
  • Turbines With Throttle Governing.
  • Turbines With Nozzle Governing.
  • Turbine With By-Pass Governing.
According To Used In Industries.
  • Stationary Turbines With Constant Speed Of Rotation.
  • Stationary Steam Turbine With Variable Speed
  • Non- Stationary Turbines With Variables Speed.

According To Steam Condition In Inlet
Turbine:-
  • Low Pressure Turbines.( Pressure Of “1.2 to 2”Ata)
  • Medium Pressure Turbines ( Pressure  Up to “4 “Ata)
  • High Pressure Turbines( Above To “40 “Ata)
Turbine Of Very High Pressure  ( Pressure Of Steam Above To  “170 “Ata And Higher And Temperature Of “550c”  And Higher)

Advantage Of Steam Turbine Over The Steam
 Engine:-

  • The Power Generation In Steam Turbine Is At Uniform Rate, While There Are Using a Fly Wheel In Case  Of Steam Engine.
  • Much Higher Speeds And Greater Range Of Speed Is Possible Than In Case Of Steam Engine.
  • No Internal Lubrication Is Required As There Is No Rubbing Part In Steam Turbine.
  • In Steam Turbine There Is No Loss Due To Initial Condensation Of Steam.
  • In Large Thermal Station Where We Required Higher Output, Steam Turbines Are Used As In Big Size.
  • Balancing Problem Is Minimized
  • It Can Utilize With High Vacuum Very Advantageously.
  • Its Overall Efficiency Is Better.
  • The Thermal Efficiency Of Steam Turbine Is Much Higher Than Steam Engine
